Census Maps for Gildersome:
The maps below contain Gildersome place names, many of which are drawn from the Gildersome Census documents for their respective year. In each case, the census compilers went street by street through Gildersome, recording one property or household before moving on to the next, making it possible to follow the recorder's movements through Gildersome, facilitating positioning on a map. The 1911 map already contained some place names but many were added by yours truley. Some additions are approximate but may be close enough to give the investigator a clue as to the general location of a household or property.
The maps may contain additions that are not found in the census but are known to me. If the reader knows of any mistakes, or has any additions, please get in touch.
Soon, I plan on adding Branch Rd, Moor Head, Gelderd Rd and The Street to the 1911 Map.

Gildersome circa 1850: This map was made by Alfred Bilbrough (1819 - 1891), who was born in Harthill House and eventually became its owner. Alfred was an accomplished artist and it appears he copied this map from either the Ordnance Survey or the Tithe Map. Click to Enlarge

Protestation Returns 1641 - 1642
I, _ A.B. _ do, in the presence of Almighty God, promise, vow, and protest to maintain, and defend as far as lawfully I may, with my Life, Power and Estate, the true Reformed Protestant religion, expressed in the Doctrine of the Church of England, against all Popery and Popish Innovations, within this Realm, contrary to the same Doctrine, and according to the duty of my Allegiance, His Majesties Royal Person, Honour and Estate, as also the Power and Privileges of Parliament, the lawful Rights and Liberties of the Subjects, and any person that maketh this Protestation, in whatsoever he shall do in the lawful Pursuance of the same: and to my power, and as far as lawfully I may, I will appose and by all good Ways and Means endeavour to bring to condign Punishment all such as shall, either by Force, Practice, Councels, Plots, Conspiracies, or otherwise, doe any thing to the contrary of any thing in this present Protestation contained: and further, that I shall, in all just and honourable ways, endeavour to preserve the Union and Peace betwixt the Three Kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland: and neither for Hope, Fear, nor other Respect, shall relinquish this Promise, Vow and Protestation. (S. E. Gardiner, History of England from the Accession of James I to the Outbreak of the Civil war 1603–1642 , Vol.9 (Cambridge,2011), p. 354)
All males the age of 18 and above were asked to sign the declaration and swear the oath to the King and the Protestant religion. In each parish, their names were inscribed in a list which was sent back to parliament. Typically a local official wrote out all the names, although in some areas the signees wrote their own names.
The Gildersome entries from the Protestation Returns is probably the oldest surviving list of residents in existence. It's interesting to note that no one from the Greathead family appears in the list. Also, the list for Morley seems to have gone missing, my speculation is that it disappeared along with much of the Farnley Wood Plot material. Names followed by an asterisk appear in the 1666 Hearth Tax list immediately below.

The Hearth Tax of 1666 & 1672
In England, hearth tax, also known as hearth money, chimney tax, or chimney money, was a tax imposed by Parliament in 1662, to support the Royal Household of King Charles II. Following the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Parliament calculated that the Royal Household needed an annual income of £1,200,000. The hearth tax was a supplemental tax to make up the shortfall. It was considered easier to establish the number of hearths than the number of heads, hearths forming a more stationary subject for taxation than people. This form of taxation was new to England, but had precedents abroad. It generated considerable debate, but was supported by the economist Sir William Petty. The bill received Royal Assent on 19 May 1662, with the first payment due on 29 September 1662, Michaelmas.
One shilling was liable to be paid for every firehearth or stove, in all dwellings, houses, edifices or lodgings, and was payable at Michaelmas, 29 September and on Lady Day, 25 March. The tax thus amounted to two shillings per hearth or stove per year. The original bill contained a practical shortcoming in that it did not distinguish between owners and occupiers and was potentially a major burden on the poor as there were no exemptions. The bill was subsequently amended so that the tax was paid by the occupier. Further amendments introduced a range of exemptions that ensured that a substantial proportion of the poorer people did not have to pay the tax. Wikipedia
The following lists contains Gildersome occupiers wealthy enough to have at least one hearth and/or one oven. Contemporary sources such as deeds and records corroborate the existence of many of these residents. Not surprising, as Scatcherd remarked, John Smith Sr. had the grandest house in Gildersome (with 6 hearths in 1663 and 7 in 1672) which was located near Branch End (later Halstead House), followed closely in 1663, with 5 hearths each, by Joshua Greathead Jr. at what will later become Church Farm (across from St Peters) and John Dickinson at the Old Hall.* Other resident occupiers are Richard Lepton at Lupton Place, Joseph Scott at Scott Green, John Walker who was Lord Savile's steward at the Manor and Joseph Crowther probably at Harthill House. Jeremy Bolton's grandson, Bolton Hargreaves, was the builder of Turton Hall.
*seems to indicate that the Old Hall existed 25 or 30 years before it was presumed built.

Land Tax List for 1782
A uniform Land Tax, originally introduced in England during the late 17th century, formed the main source of government revenue throughout the 18th century and the early 19th century. The earliest surviving records for Gildersome begin in 1781 but the 1782 list is presented here as it contains Owners as well as Occupiers which the 1781 list did not. The list records 85 dwelling and property entries. In some cases, the owner or their families may occupy a property but most are occupied by tenants, however this does not indicate that the tenant actually resided in Gildersome but may have subtenants who are the actual residents. Also a dwelling site may contain accommodations for many households, mostly under-tenants such as tradesmen and the labouring classes. So, the list must be used with caution when determining who actually resided in Gildersome. Left out below is the amount of tax for each entry.

1835 to 1850 Tithe List and Map
Tithes were originally a tax which required one tenth of all agricultural produce to be paid annually to support the local church and clergy. After the Reformation much land passed from the Church to lay owners who inherited entitlement to receive tithes, along with the land. By the early 19th century tithe payment in kind seemed a very out-of-date practice, while payment of tithes per se became unpopular, against a background of industrialisation, religious dissent and agricultural depression. The 1836 Tithe Commutation Act required tithes in kind to be converted to more convenient monetary payments called tithe rentcharge. The Tithe Survey was established to find out which areas were subject to tithes, who owned them, how much was payable and to whom. |
Enquiries were directed to every parish or township listed in the census returns. The results of these enquiries are in the tithe files, which cover the whole of England and Wales, and not only those places where tithes remained uncommuted by 1836. For parishes where tithes were still being paid in kind, the land had to be surveyed and valued, to arrive at total parish rentcharge figures, and to calculate each individual landowner’s liability to pay tithe. Assistant tithe commissioners travelled to these parishes to hold meetings with parishioners about valuations, and to settle the terms of the commutation of their tithes.
These terms were formalized in a document called a tithe agreement, if all parties concurred, or a tithe award, if the assistant commissioner had to arbitrate in a dispute. The agreement or award formed the basis of the tithe apportionment, which was the legal document setting out landowners’ individual liabilities. Each apportionment was accompanied by a map; both were signed by the Tithe Commissioners. Tithe rentcharge then became payable.
The apportionments contain written information about the area shown on the map. The maps provide a graphic index to the apportionments, using plot numbers to link each plot of land shown on the map to its description in the apportionment, which shows how much tithe rentcharge was due on that plot.
A tithe map and apportionment were originally kept together and technically constitute a single document, but have been separated to facilitate use and storage, while in the custody of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, long before their transfer to the Public Record Office, and now form two record series. Baptists Births 1797 to 1837
The following is a list of Gildersome Baptist Church members from 1797 to 1837 who had children born and registered with the church. This is not a complete list of membership nor did all the children go on to become members or even Baptists. The list is from a church book compiled by Rev. William Scarlett during the 30 or so years of his tenure as minister. It was he who handed it over to the County of York. The parents are in alphabetical order and their children, with their date of birth, are indented below each one. Not all members lived in Gildersome, so where that is the case, their town is listed. Also, here and there, Rev Scarlett added a note with an entry, I too have included those notes.
