Gildersome in the Newspapers 1850-1859
The decade of the 1850's has been chosen because it was the time when the railway came to Gildersome and, in a way, was the dividing line between the "Old" ways and the "New". Included are articles, ads and editorials that mention Gildersome specifically and left out are the numerous birth, wedding and death announcements as well as the names of Gildersome residents that appear individually in lists, such as society members, subscribers and associations. *

It must be mentioned that the Estate of Mr. & Mrs Cawthorne, right, was the former property of Mrs. Halstead of Halstead House. Mr. Cawthorne married Mrs. Halstead's daughter and the pair inherited her property. By the time of their deaths, they were one of the biggest land owners in Gildersome.
Below, the adverts were added as filler due to the length of the sale article right. It's hoped they're found interesting as well. |
